How to Build Stairs the Wrong Way

By: Jessica N

You know those guys who never want to call a professional? My father is one of them. That would be perfectly alright if he was any sort of handyman at all, but bless his heart, the only thing he should be measuring and cutting is his jam and toast. Based on his last escapade, I am going to tell you how to build stairs the wrong way.

First of all, you don't need to take any measurements. Pretend to ignore the subtle and most blatant of hints from people who think you ought to use a measuring tape. Evade probing questions like, how big are the stairs going to be once you finish?

Use your eyeballs, that's what they're there for. You can't go wrong. Sure, you might end up wasting space. Yes, your concerned guests might wonder if you hired a drunk teenager to build those stairs. But your stairs will have character!

Be sure to cut every single piece beforehand! Don't waste time figuring out if they'll fit together. Simply cut it all first and get it out of the way. All right, so maybe there's a slight risk that your pieces won't line up right and you'll end up wasting lots of wood.

If your lucky stars happen to be in alignment that day, all those pieces just might fit together seamlessly to create the perfect stairs. Or maybe not. Hey, what matters is you're having a ball either way.

Don't use any of that pricey 'quality' wood. This is of the utmost importance! Salvage any other kind of wood you can, especially if you found it on the side of the road or ripped it off some old shacks in the woods.

This way, you'll save money. Can you trust the stairs to last more than a few months? Well, that doesn't matter! It's not like you wasted money on those things anyway, right?
