How to Choose the Right Size Aquarium

By: Rob Parker

Keeping an aquarium is a great hobby. Aquariums add some decoration to your living area as well as giving a person a chance to have some pets and responsibility, both of which have been proven to have positive effects on health and lifestyle. They can also be a lot of work, and you shouldn’t just go out and buy any aquarium that you feel like. Among your considerations is going to be that of size. Here are some guidelines that will help you to understand the size of aquarium that is right for you.

The space you have. Obviously, you can’t cram a huge aquarium into a little space. Standing aquariums will typically need an entire wall area in order to fit without being in the way. Even countertop aquariums come in several different sizes, so make sure you measure out the area where you want to put the aquarium first.

Experience. A lot of people think, fish, what’s the big deal? The fact is that fish can be an awful lot of work, if of course you want to buy a certain kind of fish. Don’t start out with a huge saltwater aquarium if this is your first time with an aquatic pet. You will need to start out quite a bit smaller so that you can get used to things like cleaning, the proper amount of food as based on both the number of fish in the tank and the water space available for dispersal, and the money it takes to run the aquarium.

Budget. Starting up a new aquarium isn’t cheap, and the larger the tank, the more money you will have to spend. The tag price of the tank isn’t your only concern here; there is also the cost of in-tank decorations and necessities like rocks, cleaning apparatus, pumps, and of course the fish themselves and everything needed to keep them healthy.

The Fish. Last but not least, the species of fish and the amount of fish you want to keep will be critical in your aquarium decision. It might seem counter intuitive, but you should probably figure out the size of aquarium you can handle before you decide on its population. Most fish species will be successful only within a certain environment, and you need to know that you have the abilities to keep them thriving before you purchase. If you do already have some experience with certain types of fish, of course, their needs will help you to determine your aquarium size.
