By: Fred Jackson

There are many different kinds of wheelchairs available, so choosing between them seems rather complicated. The aren't many different types of wheelchairs available to purchase, so knowing the pros and cons of each will simply your purchasing decision. The primary wheelchair classifictions are as follows: manual, motorized, and heavy-duty. We'll look at these types and other considerations to think about when selecting a wheelchair.

WHEN USING A MANUAL WHEELCHAIR YOU HAVE TO USE YOUR UPPER BODY STRENGTH TO MOVE THE WHEELS. This style of wheelchair is best suited for around the house, and particularly in conditions with a smooth surface which is conducive to ease of motion. However, these wheelchairs cannot easily move in uneven ground.

For some people, travel outside the home can be as difficult as traveling over rough terrain; for both of these journeys, a motorized wheelchair is the best choice. These wheelchairs are single or dual battery-powered and give even the disabled person the freedom and independence of mobility. With a fully charged battery, most wheelchairs of this type can typically go about twenty miles, which should serve most users well as they carry on their daily activities.

Typical motorized wheelchairs are not sufficient if you're going to travel over particularly bumpy terrain. What is needed in such a case is a heavy duty wheelchair. The body of these wheelchairs is exceptionally strong and durable with tires that can handle even the most challenging terrain. Mobility in these wheelchairs is amazing in comparison to less durable types.
